MAKATI LAUNCHES FREE WI-FI ZONE AT CITY HALL, TWITTER ACCOUNT FOR 24-HOUR TRAFFIC UPDATES ON JULY 12

Starting tomorrow, July 12, Makati City Hall will be a free wi-fi zone as part of the plan of Mayor Jejomar Erwin S. Binay to transform Makati into the “First Wi-Fi City” in the Philippines.

Binay, who is celebrating his 35th birthday tomorrow, said that making City Hall a free wi-fi zone is only the first step of the project, to be followed by the installation of free wi-fi in all the 33 barangays of Makati.  He also acknowledged the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) as the city’s project partner and internet service provider.

“We are laying the foundation for transforming Makati into the country’s first wireless city.  We recognize that embracing modern technology is the fastest way to achieve inclusive progress and equitable growth in this age of globalization,” Binay said.

At the same time, the city government will officially launch its traffic Twitter account “MakatiTraffic” that will provide motorists and commuters 24-hour traffic updates.  The project aims to provide fast and efficient delivery of updates on road conditions or incidents, real-time traffic information and advisories particularly on major streets in the city. 

Other simultaneous activities are the relaunching of the Makati website, www.makati.gov.ph, a mega job fair and discount caravan at the City Hall Quadrangle, and a P1-discount on jeepney fares for the riding public from 8am to 12nn offered by members of the Unified Transport Federation of Makati as their birthday gift to the mayor.

The celebration will start with a mass at 7:30am, followed by a short program where Mayor Binay will officially launch the said programs and open the mega job fair and discount caravan.

The mayor called on jobseekers and entrepreneurs to participate in the twin events, themed “Trabaho at Abot-Kayang Bilihin Handog ni Mayor Jun Binay”. 

The mega job fair, organized through the Public Employment Service Office (Makati-PESO), will be held from 8am to 5pm.  Among the over 60 participating companies is PLDT, which is in search of qualified personnel to fill in a number of vacant posts including IT-related posts like software engineer/programmer, IS security specialist, Siebel developer/programmers, Unix/Oracle database administrator, among others. Its subsidiary Sun Cellular is also looking for customer care representatives and technical support staff for its NCR team.

Meanwhile, there will also be a discount caravan in collaboration with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). Over thirty companies and manufacturers will sell their products at affordable rates, giving five to 50 percent discounts or factory price.

The Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA) will also be sending its trainees to offer free haircut, massage and other services, while the Bureau of Plant Industry will be giving away free fruit-bearing and ornamental plant seedlings.

Inc., Triple E Manpower, Gingersnaps, Ceramic Plaza, Charter International, Dunkin Donuts, Ergo Contacts Phils., Inc., Finex Marketing Services, C3/Customer Contact Channels, ePerformax, Aimstaff, Inc., Avail A Work Outsourcing Solutions, BASIC, Andoks Litson, Automatic Centre, Bioessence, Brothers Burger, United Royale Corp., TRI Q Responsible Services and Celine.
